Nokia

In 1981, the Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) network, the first cellular international network, was launched. In 1987, Nokia pioneered the Mobira Cityman which was the first handheld mobile phone for a NMT network. This Nokia model, later known as the Gorba, became a classic.

In 1991, the first Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) call was made using Nokia technology. This system became the European standard and was able to carry data as well as voice. In 1992, Nokia released its first GSM handset and by 1998 Nokia became the world biggest manufacturer of mobile phones.

In 2005, Nokia sold it billionth phone and in 2007 Nokia was recognized as the fifth most valuable brand in the world. With all of its history, Nokia has strongly established their position in the mobile phones industry for the current and future years to come. On September 21st, 2009 The Dow Jones named Nokia the most sustainable technology company in the world.

Nokia puts a lot of time and effort in their Research & Development. There are a few technologies coming down their pipeline (to be released in the next few years) that will completely change the way people look at mobile phones. The Nokia Multiscanner, will be a personal translator for your mobile phone. This will give the consumer the capability to take a photo of anything while travelling and have their phone translate the language into the appropriate language for them. While, the NFC (Near Fields Communication) technology allows for consumers to pay for items using their phone, to instantaneously share photos, and files with others, and to purchase tickets from posters etc. This technology is already available on two Nokia phones and will be available on more models in the next few years. The Indoor Positioning technology will allows users to be able to locate locations indoors. It is a similar concept to an indoor GPS; however it has the ability to locate specific positions down to just a few meters. Consumer will be able to locate a meeting room or a specific painting in a museum just by using their mobile phone. Nokia is currently running tests on this technology and continuing to make it more efficient.
