
Nextel is a telecommunications firm in the United States is best known for providing a nation-wide “push to talk” mobile communications system, which provides the benefits of walkie-talkies. Nextel’s network operates on the Specialized Mobile Radio (SMR) band, unlike other cellular provider’s networks. Nextel also was one of the first providers in the United States to offer a national digital cellular coverage footprint. Nextel is now known as the Sprint Nextel Corporation after it was acquired by Sprint in 2005.
